I came across this agreement in a book I purchased recently, and what a lovely thing it is. The badges are quite common, but I had never seen a copy of this before.

Re: The Best Physical Culturists of the 1920's

Peter I note that you mention in your comments a time interval up to the 1960s. I wonder if that’s because you were thinking what I was. A cynic might say that to trespass into dates much beyond the late 1950s perhaps the very early 1960s in assessing physical elegance is fraught with controversy ov...

Re: The Best Physical Culturists of the 1920's

The right honourable gentleman makes some very good points in his final paragraph. The definition of physical culture is the development of the body by exercise. Exercise as a means to what end -to look pretty per se or to incidentally become a fine physical specimen for reasons other than pure narc...

Re: HEALTH AND STRENGTH MAGAZINE

O.K. chaps here're the final answers. He was George Ernest Greenwood. He was not 62 when he died as has been suggested he was actually 65. This discrepancy was steering me to the wrong date of birth. He was born on 5 August 1917 in Thanet, Kent NOT in December 1921 in Luton. He married in Thanet in ...

Re: HEALTH AND STRENGTH MAGAZINE

Peter Thanks. The delving was as usual helped by garnering seemingly small details such as the names of George Greenwood's children. The final stumbling block to finding his death details, however trivial it may seem, is not knowing what the "E" stood for in his second forename. If someone knows wha...

Re: The Best Physical Culturists of the 1920's

Peter A.P. Mead has to be in the running. Incidentally I have a bit of info which may be of interest on the high-brow Phillips-Mead family - they didn't use the hyphenated version. Alan Phillips Mead (6 April 1894 - 29 July 1972, Greenwich) was one of four brothers all in the well-heeled family lega...

Re: HEALTH AND STRENGTH MAGAZINE

I had a further probe by concentrating the two children of George Greenwood i.e. Tony and Hilary & I think I may have finally nailed the links. A George E. Greenwood was born in Luton in 1921 the son of Herbert Arthur Barnet Greenwood (b. 23 July 1888) & Ellen Greenwood (nee Hunt) who married in Sep...

Re: HEALTH AND STRENGTH MAGAZINE

Hi Peter I have to say I'm not 100% confident about this one given the disparity between the various suggested dates but also because I can't find a common Mother's maiden name for George Greenwood's two alleged children, Hilary and Tony, who are mentioned in the article authored by David. As I said...

Re: HEALTH AND STRENGTH MAGAZINE

O.K. now we've got some traction. George Lucas Greenwood was born on 1 August 1920. He married Ethel E. V. Burt (born 17 March 1914 and who lived at 11 Joubert St, Battersea) in Q3 1946 George L. Greenwood's death is registered in November 1987 -see attachment thus making him 67 years at his death. ...
