Natural lifting- summed up in one picture
Then there's John Lees. Lifting just about 2 years and beats Hiedenstam, who won his first competition back in 1936! Oscar had also been a very accomplished athlete and sportsman before.
So a guy lifting for 2 years beats a man lifting for over 15 years at least, probably longer.
Lees went on to become a heavy weight, finally winning Mr universe in 1957. But even he looked small next to Reg Park.
I really think this picture sums up natural lifting in so many ways!
Also, from this angle- I think Reub Martin should have placed higher, and Oscar had great legs and calves!

Hi Tom,
always liked this photo. While John had a great shoulder width, Rueb was even wider which would have shown if they were both facing forward. At this stage John was light in the leg department, while Oscar tops the line up for legs. And yes this is what bodybuilders were aiming for in the 50s in the UK and it was for many attainable without drugs.
Regards,Peter.

Do we know what bodyweight these guys were at?
Re: Natural lifting- summed up in one picture
For those of us who are uninformed can someone state, from left to right, who each of these gentlemen are.
I believe Sean Connery was also at that contest or maybe a year or two afterwards. Many don't know that "James Bond" had done a bit of bodybuilding in his younger days prior to getting famous.

Sean Connery did indeed compete as a bodybuilder in 1953 at the Mr. Universe contest.28kgKB wrote:For those of us who are uninformed can someone state, from left to right, who each of these gentlemen are.

not being pedantic but sean connery did not compete in the 1953 nabba universe.it was tom connery who competed then.sean came later when toms acting carreer began to be a sucess.tom hailed from bonnie scotland.i have tried for years to find his earlier contest results.without sucess.he must have won the mr scotland and placed highly in the mr britain in order to qualify for the universe.sean much later in life, even after james bond, was asked about the universe he c ompeted in his reply was that he couldnt remember much, but a black guy won.that was bill pearl
