.in the early 70s pat mcshane owner of coatbridge health and strength gym, used to run a bus to harolds north west contests. i went on a few of these trips. pat use to run the anual mr lanarkshire contest in coatbridge, scotland. harold brought up a busload of spectators and a few competitors as well as guest stars such as mr britain winners eddie mcdonough roy duval and the mighty walter omalley. the mr lanarkshire contest was a local show. i had won it a few times before. however that all changed when harold started bringing englands top stars to compete. 1973 i was expected to win again. on the day of the contest harold brought harold dickinson, wesley immundi, doug thomola, ian king and a few others to compete. dickinson won with wesley second and myself 3 rd. there was a lineup of 15 competitors in that show. i was delighted to have placed 3rd against the tough competition. of course the scottish competitors were moaning that the english were allowed to compete in what had been for years a local show. some said to me i was robbed of the title because of this. i told them that it was better to be beaten by the top names in british bodybuilding, rather than win against mediocre physiques. so for the next couple of years harold continued to show his support to pat, by bringing up the top guys to scotland, plus by harold doing this ensured sell out audiences. i had been trained by don dorans for that show.don was living in scotland then. later that year don and i travelled to harolds north west show.don decided he was coming out of retirement and was going to enter the over 35s category. don was 60 years of age. i helped him prepare backstage. don was competing against guys 25 years younger than him.he got 3rd place. however he brought the house down with his posing and muscle controll act. he recieved a standing ovation. there was great cammeraderie at contests back in the day. something lacking now unfortunetly. regards, ray.

Here's a great film of the 1979 NABBA North West from Holdsworth Hall in Manchester where the standard was just incredible and many went on to national success and long careers. Pretty sure I can name all but one of the male competitors. Great to see Roy Duvall guest posing too - Roy went on to compete in the 1980 Mr Olympia after winning both the NABBA and IFBB versions of the Mr Universe. If you watch closely you'll also see Harold Wrigley handing out some prizes. I think I was actually at this show and remember being absolutely blown away by the sheer size and shape of Wesley Immundi.
If you haven't seen it before, it's a great watch!
