HI Ray, just to offer my opoligies, of course i remember you, as you were a great power lifter. i was also powerlifting in those days in the SAWLA which is South, not Scottish. I think like me you loved the bench press, its just yours were way out of my league, although i did press double bodyweight and the association were good with awards etc, most of which i gave away to a collector, shame. You also to my memory and Peters research multi Scotlands Strong man circa 1981/82/83. If you have any, can you put them on the site, if not, i will take a trawl through the mags i have of those dates and try to find some photos. I second Peter, you are truly welcome, a man of your experience and knowledge, thanks for joining the gang mate. Last time i was in Scotland was last year at Dave Websters birthday bash, his 90th and dear old Bill Kazmaier was there still looking scary....best wishes David Gentle

hi david, yes i was scotlands strongest man 3 times, you are correct on those dates.also competed in the first televised britains strongest man which was aired by itv.barbra windsor was co presenter.we all had to share the same hotel for the 5 days of filming. what a hoot she was. funny off stage and a down to earth person.shame she has contracted that insidious disease dementia.i won 3 events in that contest, much to geof capes disgust, never ever met such a sore loser . he reminded me of the typical school bully. anyway i digress.it can be watched on you tube. also i was british powerlifting champion 4 times. 77.78,79 at 100kg and 83 at 110 kgs.also european champion and world cup champion 1980 at 100kgs. mr scotland 87. wabba masters mr europe 1990. went on to compete with the world police and fire service federation till 1998 winning every contest i entered in the years 95 to 98. contest were bodybuilding, powerlifting, bench press and i broke world games records in the strength events. i have written a book on my life in the iron game. it is brutally honest and may upset certain people, including yourself. as i name and shame certain personalitys in the sport of strongman, powerlifting and bodybuilding. peter yates has a copy of my book.it is an ebook, i give you permision to print it out in the library section here.in the book are numerous photos also. best wishes, ray,

I have mentioned Ray's book previously on the forum, and it is in mind recommended reading for anyone interested in the history of the iron game especially powerlifting and Strongman. In all three sports, powerlifting, BB and Strongman Ray has stood toe to toe with the best often coming out victorious. Terrific read for the price of a coffee, containing many interesting and amusing anecdotes about the those involved in those sports at the time, and as Ray says "no punches pulled." Also check out the First televised Britain's strongest man on YouTube. A glimpse back to the time when all types of strength athletes got together to test their metal before it became an official sport. Ray puts in a good performance especially on the very difficult back lift.Well worth watching. Today in his late 60s Ray is still in great condition working out regularly, as is his wife also a top former BB and Strongwoman competitor.
Regards,Peter.
