Post by louiscyr3 » Wed May 13, 2020 4:48 am

I am looking to purchase hard copy photos/prints of Boxers Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries training with Sandow dumbbells. Thank you.

Hi Peter. I have sourced the images I was seeking and purchased them. I found Jeffries on CardCow.com
and Johnson on jackjohnsonboxing.com
Thanks.
Eric.

Interesting that the Sandow company didn't draw the colour line when it came to making a dollar!

Thanks Richie, I reckon it took more than Sandow DBs to turn Jack into the mighty pugilist he was. Push ups, sit ups, road work and chopping wood were his main means of strength and conditioning. Heavy and light bag work and sparring honed his ring skills. He had a fair wingspan didn't he?

Glad you found the pix you wanted Richie, as Peter says, Johnson didn't get any boxing skills or development out of dumbells, just a few dollars more to add to his treasure chest, If you read up on him , you will find he was a VERY controversial man, mainly due to the colour problem they had in the USA at that period, hence the boxing world looking for "The white hope" at the time. one things for sure the ladies liked him and it wasn't anything to do with his Sandow dumbbells. Other pix of Johnson will give you a probable reason why......nuff said. He was a defensive boxer as well which annoyed the crowd seeking blood, but Johnson was too skilled for anyone they could throw up against him. David Gentle
